Moments of the Week – #31

A bunch of awesome moments from this week!

Links to fun/cool stuff and recent photos…

My friend Liz is producing her solo show “Take Me to the Poorhouse” (I’ve seen excerpts and it’s AWESOME)—support her campaign on IndieGogo (only 4 days left!).

Another friend (and digital nomad), Natalie, is raising funds to writer her book on how to travel regularly AND have a thriving biz (what she has been doing for the last few years)—you can help her out on Kickstarter!

My pal Katie just launched a new mood and habit web app called Critter.co—and she enlisted me to help write the Peace and Calm module. Check it out to give yourself a boost!

I recently started reading “Attached”—all about attachment theory and how to have stronger relationships. Very interesting read (and I’ve identified myself as the anxious type). Learn more about “Attached” at the site!

The charity: water birthday campaign is still going on! Donate here to help bring clean water to people in Ethiopia!

And on the water theme,  (including cameos from a couple people I know!)

Want some random HEALTH information (that could change your life)? Check out How to Decalcify Your Pineal Gland (a part of your brain). Seriously, I didn’t think I’d watch this, but the information was pretty captivating.

I’ve been a fan of Tony Schwartz’s work for a few years. Here’s a new article of his in the NY Times: Relax! You’ll Be More Productive.

I also enjoyed this article on CNN about the rise of the “nomadic rich,” including the emotional challenges that can come from life on the road.

My recent host and friend Etsuko wrote a very kind article about my stay with her family.

I participated in REI’s 1440 Project (documenting every minute of a single day). Here’s my entry!

On with the show…

(covering the last two weeks) From family life and food in Carlsbad to downtown Los Angeles—here we go!

Making more food with my favorite helper, Lucia! :)

This time: pizza, with a homemade gluten-free crust (first time for me!). We also used some AMAZING tomato chutney for the sauce that Michelle had made for a WDS San Diego meetup, and then tons of awesome vegetables (mushrooms, peppers, onion, garlic), plus fresh basil from the garden, and a bit of soy chorizo! This was a truly GREAT meal, and very fun as a family… ;)

What are these?? Why, soaked and peeled almonds. After soaking for 12 hours (to break down the enzymes and make the almonds more digestible), the brown skins just slip off. We used this batch to whip up some homemade almond milk in the blender!

Time to pack the school lunches for the next day—tonight, the kids wanted to be involved. It was an adventure… :)

For some reason, Lu really liked dressing me up… I of course went along for the ride. When in Rome, right? :)

One night when watching the kids, I decided to make them almond butter/banana pancakes—and added fresh mango and blueberries! Turned out awesome!!

Enjoying the afternoon sun from their backyard garden…

Thanks to my friends at YoungandRaw.com, I made some healthy (!) candied apples: the caramel (which tasted excellent!) was made from medjool dates, almond butter, and maple syrup.

The kids’ birthdays are about a month apart, and they had a joint celebration, including a homemade cake decorated by their mom Michelle—very cool and great work!!

And yes, the theme was princesses and pirates (all the kids dressed as one or the other)! Oh—and do you like that ship? I put it together (similar to IKEA furniture)! :)

I was also brainstorming some ideas for healthy snacks at the party, and came up with this twist on “ants on a log”: celery, almond butter, and then cacao nibs and cranberries. Good stuff!!

A nice message to see on Feb. 12th this year (my 32nd)!

Went out for a hike on my birthday, up into the hills of Carlsbad—pretty epic view (the ocean is in the distance)!

Took the family dog, Moke, along with me—I think she had a great time. :)

Very sweet of Michelle to help me celebrate properly—and they were even healthy cupcakes (from 2Good2B Bakery in Carlsbad)!

And what did I make for a birthday treat? Chocolate pudding! (Avocado, almond butter, cacao powder, and a bit of honey). Dee-lish!

I hit 1000 straight days of meditation on February 13th—and since I was at the Chopra Center, I hit up one of their meditation classes in the evening to get in my second dose for the day! :)

Had “dinner” with Jen and Caleb, two friends from the World Domination Summit community. They had their parent’s Vitamix and wanted to use it more: I helped them put it to good use! :)

From my final night in Carlsbad, a beautiful sunset (there were many during my two-week stay).

The parents went out for Valentine’s Day, so I watched the kids and made parfaits: complete with lots of fresh fruit, leftover caramel sauce (see apples above), and a homemade cashew whip cream. Yes I ate all of this. :)

Arriving at Union Station in downtown LA, I took the DASH bus to a nearby and new favorite restaurant: Mendocino Farms (doing some cool farm-to-table stuff) and had the Healthy Diner Chicken Sandwich on a Cranberry Walnut bread. Just as great as I remember!

Joining me for lunch were my new friends from San Diego: Peter and Etsuko (along with their kids Kenta and Isamu; baby Hiroto was already in the car seat). Really awesome to see them again—and those kids are such hams. :)

See ya next week from somewhere else in the world!
